The Hand Drill is a tool in Space Engineers that can be used to mine stone and ore. Ores can be stored in the various Cargo Containers and processed at the Refinery into ingots, powder, or wafers which can be transformed into tools, ammo and components at the Assembler.
Usage
The Hand Drill is not as effective as the vehicular Drills and takes longer to mine. Additionally, it does not automatically collect ore, leaving them floating free to be collected by hand. Also the alternate fire button can be used to create much larger holes in an asteroid without dropping any ore. This can be useful when building underground structures and tunnels as it is much faster any other form of drilling. However it is not advised if the player is planning on gaining resources.
On the other hand, it is much more energy efficient for a player to mine by hand, depleting suit energy, than to pilot a mining ship which consumes considerably more power. Additionally, the Hand Drill has a built in Ore Detector, allowing players to locate veins of ore at short ranges.
In PvP situations, the Hand Drill is nearly incapable of dealing damage to players. However it can possibly be useful in a combat situation by quickly making trenches and hiding spots within an asteroid.
Assembly
There are now three upgraded versions of the Hand Drill. They are assumed to be superior to the standard Hand Drill but it is unclear how. Each can be crafted at the Assembler with the recipes listed below, on the "Realistic" setting.
