In order for a solar panel to produce energy, its solar face must be exposed to direct sunlight.  It is not necessary to aim the panels directly at the sun, but the panels will produce less power if they are not placed effectively.  The efficiency of the panel is indicated by a series of green bars at the side of the panel.  When all of the bars are lit, the panel is at the maximum efficient position and you will receive its maximum benefit.  A solar panel will produce a maximum output of 6 Kilowatts.

Functionality

The Solar Panel uses natural sunlight to produce power.  It is currently the only means of producing electricity other than having an active reactor, making the Solar Panel exremely useful for maintaining installations for long periods of time at a low relative cost.

A solar panel will produce a maximum output of 4.26 Kilowatts.

Objects can block sunlight from reaching the panel.  Ships and asteroids can potentially completely eclipse the panel from producing power, while glass panels will partially eclipse solar exposure.

One Panel with full production will produce enough energy to supply a Medical room, meaning, that you are independant from uranium, in order to survive.

One Assembler, one Refinery and one Gravity generator will use up to 1687.13 Kw of energy, meaning that you need 397 solar panels to use all 3 with a maximum production of 4.26 Kw per panel.
